Adagiato su una collina a 280mt. sul livello del mare, con vedute che si dispiegano fra l’Adriatico e l’Appennino, lo splendido centro storico è fra i meglio conservati delle Marche. La sua conformazione urbanistica si ispira ai canoni architettonici della Città come “ Corpo Vivente” di Leonardo e di Francesco Di Giorgio Martini. Il complesso Rocca-Piazza-Municipio-Chiesa ne è il capo, il corso Roma il tronco e le vie collegate gli arti.

L’origine di Mondavio è piuttosto incerta, la tradizione lo fa risalire dal toponimo Mons Avium cioè monte degli Uccelli di lirica e francescana memoria cui si salderebbe la notizia che il borgo sorse intorno al Convento Francescano su un terreno che la famiglia Ricci aveva donato a S.Francesco.

The origin of Mondavio is rather uncertain, tradition traces it back to the toponym Mons Avium, i.e. Mount of the Birds of lyrical and Franciscan memory which would be linked to the news that the village was built around the Franciscan convent on land that the Ricci family had donated to St. Francis.
